One of the things I really enjoyed was Choir. When I was in grade school in Rock Island I had a great music teach. She made music really fun. At that school you were weird if you weren't in choir. When we moved to Hampton I was really bummed because all they had was a girls choir. I guess the guys didn't think it was cool to sing. Like it was a threat to their manhood or something. LOL Once I started at UT I really wanted to take choir but with the split schedule I didn't have any elective classes free our freshman year. The same thing happened our sophomore year. Then they announce if you had lunch hour the same time as they had Freshman/Sophomore Choir you could be in Choir. I did so I went. Most days I grabbed a quick sandwich and headed to Choir. Mr. Dyer was very challenging. Some days he would push so hard everyone was mad. But in the end we would get it right. He would always tell us a lot of what we were doing was college level music. I really enjoyed the challenge. Once we had performed a song we knew we had really accomplished something. I will never forget the one Christmas Season when we were invited to sing on a Channel 8 TV show. It was snowing like mad but most of us got there so we could be on TV. Too bad VCR's weren't really available back then. The Members of the UT choir were good people too. I have a lot of fond happy memories of our time in UT choir. --Brad Settles |
